Thanks for a Great 2021 Season!

Last Trip of the year! October 2021

Greetings From Montana,

The 2021 Yellowstone National Park fishing season officially concluded this past Sunday closing yet another great fishing season here in Montana. Thanks so much for making this 2021 fishing season amazing and memorable. Every season has its own highs and lows, and 2021 was no different with our water levels and abnormally warm and cold temperatures. The 2021 season sure had a personality of its own. But, we cannot control the weather! We can only go out there and make the best out of what the Rocky Mountains give us that day. Sometimes it’s cool temps and low lying clouds in August, other times it’s a 6am meet time with triple digit afternoon temps. Thanks so much for coming out, fishing hard, laughing, smiling, telling stories, learning, and enjoying this great place! Here are some quick 2021 highlights:

June 2021 in Yellowstone

Great first fish! July 2021

Early September 20210 On the dropper

-We started with 107% of our average snowpack in the Spring. April and the first part of May produced great fishing on the Yellowstone River. We then had the warmest late May/June on record and our snowpack dropped to record lows.

-Early June in Yellowstone produced some great fishing although the Firehole had a pretty short season. We were able to fish our northern rivers more, including the Gardiner and Yellowstone.

-The Yellowstone started fishing very well around June 20th (about 2 weeks early). Salmonfly season was active with lots of bugs and clear water.

-It was HOT in June and July! We had consistent afternoon temps of 95+ degrees! We started to implement our own “Hoot Owl” restrictions.

-The state and Yellowstone National Park officially implemented “Hoot Owl” restrictions in the 3rd week of July- No fishing after 2pm. Thanks for meeting us early!

-The hopper fishing stayed good to excellent through the Hoot Owl. We spent a good amount of time fishing in Yellowstone National Park.

-THANKFULLY, August brought chilly temps and lots of rain! Many locals said it was the wettest, coldest August in recent memory. We needed every drop. The rain brought mud in the Yellowstone, so we fished hard in the best clarity we could find or found clear water on some Park adventures.

-September and October produced some great weather allowing our season to extend through the end of October with some fun days back on the Firehole.

2021 definitely was one to remember. Again, thanks for coming out to Montana and we cannot wait to see you next year! It snowed on Saturday night! Time to turn on the fireplace, restock the fly boxes, throw snowballs for the dogs, wax the skis, hit the slopes, dream of snow and drink a Salmonfly Honey Rye because…….. The 2022 season is almost here! Give us a call to get your 2022 dates on the books. Have a wonderful and safe winter season.
